Egypt military says won't allow continued strikes

CAIRO: Egypt's ruling military says it will not allow the continuation of "illegal" strikes and protests that have disrupted the country's economy.

The military says in a statement on the state news agency MENA that it will "confront" such unrest with "legal steps."

The statement appears to be referring to the labor strikes that have spread wildly across the country since the final days before longtime leader Hosni Mubarak fell a week ago.

It is not clear whether the warning also applies to the massive political protests centered on Cairo's Tahrir Square. Protesters held a new massive rally on Friday, demanding the military now listen to its demands for reform, and organizers say they will hold similar rallies weekly.
