man vs food

Where Colossal Determination Meets Ginormous Food

Adam Richman Man vs Food Season 1In case you've never heard of Adam Richman, you're in the right place.Adam is the host of Travel Channel's hit TV show Man vs Food. He travels the country hitting any recommended hotspots (per the locals) then gives us the inside scoop to the best 2 restaurants he finds before tackling his staple food challenge to finish each episode.
Using light hearted humor mixed with a dash of charm and a pinch of wit, Adam brings a smile to my face with nearly every episode. He doesn't claim to be a competition eater, and firmly denounces over-eating as a regular habit. Consuming 6-10 pounds of food in one sitting could cost you the price of admission to the Emergency Room.Adam never looks scared though, he just grabs a fork and goes in to battle.
We cover a full review of each episode with links to the restaurants he visits in case your headed their way, along with pictures of what he eats and the results of each food challenge he takes on. So, let's hit the road - Adam Richman style...

Adam Richman's first Man vs Food Episode -
The Big Texan Steak Ranch Challenge

Season: 1
Episode: 1
Location: Amarillo, TX
Challenge Results: Man Wins
72 oz. steak challenge on Man vs Food
How better to launch the new Travel Channel television show Man vs Food than with a huge steak challenge. The host of Man vs Food, Adam Richman, will take on the whopping 72 oz. steak challenge that also includes a very large baked potato, a shrimp cocktail, large salad, and dinner roll in under 1 hour.
The owner of The Big Texan Steak Ranch restaurant in Amarillo Texas says "48,000 have tried but only 8000 have succeeded". More on the steak challenge in a minute. First...

The Coyote Bluff Cafe

The Burger From Hell
Before Adam dives in to his food challenges, he likes to visit any area hot spots recommended by the locals. In this episode Richman starts out with a visit to the Coyote Bluff Cafe owned by Rob Haas. Adam is there to tackle the best burger in town according to locals, "The Burger From Hell".
Made from an 8 oz. all beef patty, covered in grilled jalapeño peppers, homemade habañero sauce, cayenne pepper sauce, and smothered in cheese, it looks like a mountain of delicious pain. They also sell a huge amount of chilli cheese fries. 2 pounds of Idaho potatoes, 1 pound of cheese, and topped with fresh green chilles. It's no wonder this place usually has a line out the door.

The Stockyard Cafe

Chicken Fried Steak
On Adam's second stop before his main food challenge, he swings by The Stockyard Cafe located inside the biggest cattle auction house in the country. Several thousand head of beef cattle are auctioned every week here, and The Stockyard Cafe sits right at the entrance. As you can imagine, with so many beef men there on business the menu is primarily beef.
The unanimous favorite here is the chicken fried steak. All homemade from 100% beef cutlet that been egg dipped, rolled in flour, and pan fried like chicken. Next they give you a large helping of fresh homemade mashed potatoes and gravy over all of it. Just watching it cook on the Man vs Food show you could smell it. It looked delicious!

The Big Texan Steak Ranch

back to the 72 oz Steak Challenge ...

Adam is going to attempt to eat 72 ounces, that's 4.5 pounds of steak along with a shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad and roll in under an hour. In this challenge he has two competitors sitting at the table with him. If you haven't seen this episode be sure to check Travel Channel for reruns as it's a mind blowing one and a great way to start his show, but I digress.
The owners Danny and Bobby Lee, say the challenge originated with their father Bob Lee.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch was built next to the stockyards in Amarillo and when the work day was done the place filled up with hungry cowboys. Bob decided to have a contest to see which one could eat the most and play upon those cowboy egos.
Everyone put money in a hat and the one who ate the most got all the cash. Clever idea. However, the winner ate 4 and a half 1 pound steaks, a shrimp cocktail, a baked potato, dinner salad and a roll in under an hour. Bob Lee couldn't believe it and announced that any other person that could eat that much in his restaurant would eat for free! And the Big Texan legend was born.
Adam calls this steak "a bicycle seat of meat". And that's probably an under estimation. He goes in with a strategy and easily overtakes his competitors and leaves them in the dust. Finishing the entire steak first in about 20 minutes he moves on to the rest of the meal and finishes everything in just under 28 minutes.
