Osama bin Laden is dead, and the United States is in possession of his body, President Barack Obama is expected to announce shortly.
The stunning news of the death of the Al Qaeda mastermind almost ten years after the September 11th terrorist attacks came about as the result of an as yet unspecified U.S. military action, according to CNN and NBC News.
Bin Laden was killed in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, CNN further reported.
News networks were notified around 10pm that Obama planned to give a highly unusual address to the nation on an unspecified national security matter at approximately 11pm from the White House East Room.
Bin Laden's body is no longer in Afghanistan, CNN further reported. A full autopsy will be performed to confirm the body belongs to bin Laden, whose DNA the U.S. has been in possession of.
The stunning development comes on the eighth anniversary of former President George W. Bush's controversial "mission accomplished" statement aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln after the March 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
