Twitter is considering adding branded pages to its site, much like LinkedIn and Facebook have done in recent years.
Twitter is having a cash crisis. After years of doing its own thing, the social network is finally deciding that it’s time to make some money. As such, Twitter may add branded pages to its site. Marketing Magazine reports that the pages would work a lot like Facebook Pages, which give brands their own profile page and let them acquire followers and post out updates. CEO Dick Costolo and Adam Bain, president of revenue, are leading the push to add revenue streams to the site.
What we don’t know is how, exactly, the pages will be different from the great number of branded pages businesses have already created for the Website. Twitter already offers Promoted Accounts, which give account holders a place in the site’s Recommended Follower’s lists. Will official branded pages have more information on them, or feature a larger profile picture or more links? We’re interested to find out.

More importantly, this may not help Twitter’s problem of elite users–celebrities, bloggers, media outlets, and organizations (brands)–posting about half of all tweets. Perhaps Twitter should look into ways to drive more use from regular users.
A Twitter spokesperson said that companies have expressed a “strong interest” in branded pages.
