Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been adjourned sine die after violence erupted in the campus on Friday night as students of two rival groups clashed with each other.
Reports said the two warring groups of students opened fire with about 100 rounds fired in all. They pelted stones at each other and ransacked university property. At least 12 students were injured in the clashes.
Anil Kumar, District Magistrate of Aligarh, has confirmed the firing in the campus.
While one of the student groups belongs to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, the other has students mostly from Bihar.
No arrests have been made so far.
The university authorities have asked the inmates to vacate the hostels within the next 48 hours. Security has also been beefed up in and around the campus.
The Azamgarh group has sought the removal of deputy controller of the university alleging “serious irregularities” in admission procedure. On the other hand the Bihar lobby is throwing their weight behind the deputy controller.
