What is laser hair therapy?

Laser light hair loss treatment is the latest non-surgical attempt as hair growth treatment.  It utilizes infrared low-level cool laser light as hair loss therapy.  According to the manufacturer it is used “to encourage hair to appear thicker, fuller and healthier.”  Laser hair treatments are cosmetic and dermatology approved.

How does healthy hair grow?

There are three main phases of the individual healthy hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen, and telogen.  Anagen is the active hair growth phase in the hair growth cycle. It lasts for about 4 to 5 years. In the 5th year, the catagen stage evolves, a period of regression of the hair follicle. Ultimately, the hair falls out at a resting period, called the telogen stage. By the 6th year, new hairs grow and the hair growth cycle begins again.  

The number of hair on a healthy scalp is approximately 100,000. On a normal human scalp about 90 percent of follicles is continually in the anagen stage of the hair growth stage.  The average rate of hair fiber growth is around half an inch per month.  This rate varies depending upon the hair follicle and the age of the individual.

CREATE NEW HAIR

1. Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar): A pill taken once daily that blocks the effects of testosterone on hair growth. Testosterone is a hormone found in higher concentrations in men. Finasteride is not currently used for the treatment of hair loss in women.
2. Minoxidil (Rogaine, Loniten): A medication you rub directly onto your scalp. This medication enlarges hairs and makes them grow for a longer period.

• It works for both men and women.

Scalp rotation: A doctor moves a piece of your scalp that has good hair growth to an area of poor growth. The procedure is effective in children, but adults do not respond well to this type of treatment.
