"Diet'' soft drinks linked to premature births

London, Aug 19 : Drinking lots of artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancyincreases the risk of premature births, according to a new study.
The study, conducted on almost 60,000 pregnant women in Denmark, found that those who drank artificially sweetened soft drinks, whether fizzy or still, were more likely to give birth early.
Researchers found that those who drank one serving per day of artificially sweetened fizzy drink were 38 per cent more likely to give birth before 37 weeks gestation and those who consumed four servings a day were 78 per cent more likely to have their baby prematurely.
The effect was weaker for still artificially soft drinks and there was no link between premature birth and sugar-sweetened drinks, they said.
Researchers think that the artificial sweeteners are broken down in the body into chemicals, which may change the womb.

London : A new research has shown that an infrared laser can make aheart beatfaster, which may help in understanding reasons for congenital defects.
Case Western Reserve University and Vanderbilt University researchers have found that pulsed light can pace contractions in an avian embryonic heart, with no apparent damage to the tissue, reports Nature.
According to the scientists, this non-invasive device may prove an effective tool in understanding how environmental factors that alter an embryo''s heart rate lead to congenitaldefects.
It may also lead to investigations of cardiac electrophysiology at the cellular, tissue and organ levels, and possibly the development of a new generation of pacemakers.

Cancer is not a disease of the rich but a global health priority, say experts

London, Aug 16 :Medical experts have called for action on cancer, saying that it is not a ''disease of the rich'' but a global health priority.
"The integration ofcancer prevention and care where both are needed is precisely what we need to do if we are to make the response to the challenge as global as cancer itself," Lancet quoted Paul Farmer, chair of the HMS department of global health and social medicine, as saying.
"There are clearly effective interventions that can prevent or ease suffering due to many malignancies, and that is surely our duty as physicians or policy makers or health advocates," he added.
Comparing cancer fatality rates between low- and high-income countries reveals stark disparities.
Fatality rates in low-income countries are 75 percent, in lower middle-income 72 percent, and in upper middle-income 64 percent.
This enormous difference in survival - particularly for many highly treatable and curable cancers such as cervical, breast, testicular and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children - denote the scope of action.
"As a person living with cancer, diagnosed in a developing country, I believe we must address this glaring inequity. Evidence shows that this can be done," said Felicia Knaul.
