The details on what had been holding up the budget deal had been shrouded in mystery, until Reid revealed on Friday morning that funding for women's health care at Planned Parenthood was the last obstacle.
President Obama and the democrats held their ground and averted a government shutdown, just moments before midnight last night. However the credit for getting the Tea Party Republicans to compromise may go to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
"Reid said that Vice President Joe Biden was angered that Republicans weren't backing down on cutting Planned Parenthood funding, and he told them at one point, "Well, fine. Let the American people decide this issue then, "according to Bloomberg.
After that, the GOP and Tea Party were shamed into either agreeing to a compromise, or risk alienating powerful women voters.
The $38 billion dollar budget cut deal still contains secrets. However, what the public has learned from this battle is that the Tea Party Republicans are not friends of the middle class. Almost all of the GOP cuts targeted programs that help low income and working class Americans. At the same time, the radical Tea Party agenda is filled with rollbacks of safety and environmental regulations that only benefit the wealthy and corporate polluters.
Just because the GOP gave in on their attack on women's health care funding, does not mean that they have given up on promoting their ultra conservative social agenda.
The 2012 budget proposed by GOP Rep. Paul Ryan is aimed at ending Medicare and other programs that help the working class, the poor, the disabled, and the elderly.
Ironically, Mr. Ryan's budget plan does not balance the budget. Most of the savings in program cuts are offset by additional tax cuts for the wealthiest top 2% of Americans.
